BU Falls to Princeton in Final Match of the Season

BUWRFC spent the majority of Halloween weekend on a bus traveling to and from Princeton, NJ where they eventually lost to the Tigers 22-0.

Arriving late Friday night/early Saturday morning, BU made the long trek down to the Garden State to play Princeton in the first round of DI playoffs. Boston University was ranked second in NERFU DI and Princeton was second in the Ivies.

By the time BU arrived at the field, there was no green grass to be seen; no white lines; and certainly no temperatures above freezing. Warmups were kept to just the necessities, and the warming-up aspect proved a challenge. After getting tackled to the ground a few times it was clear that this was going to be a long and cold game. During the second half the snow turned to hail, making doing anything with open eyes a challenge. Scrumhalf, Melissa DiFabio (SAR ’12) had an excellent defensive game and with frozen hands, even managed to get off solid offensive passes. The last few minutes brought long (relative to the game) runs from backs Christina Vailas (COM ’12) and Jordan Lavy (CAS ’12). Despite a few cases of hypothermia, many frostbitten extremities and a few staples to the head, BU was not able to walk away with a win on the field.

The team had an extraordinarily long journey home thanks to the amount of snow, but was safely delivered back to campus very early Sunday morning. The following coaches and Athletic Trainers deserve a huge thank-you and many warm cups of coffee for braving the weather (and the team): Nicholas Hildebidle, Kate McCabe, Emily Malkin, Beth Wolfe, Nick and Kaitlyn. They not only supported the team this past weekend, but every day throughout the season. BU Rugby would be lost in the snow without them!

The loss ends the season for the Terriers; however, all is not gone. According to an outside source, this is the first time in BU Women’s Rugby history that any team has won more than one game in Divison I, and certainly the first to make it to playoffs in DI. With the only two losses of the season coming from ARMY and Princeton, BUWRFC is ready to live up to the challenge and will be ready for both teams in the Spring and Fall.

Keep on rucking, BU…

BU Goes 2-0 in Final Weekend of Regular Season

The Boston University Women had a tough schedule on the final weekend of regular season play. With Northeastern on Saturday and a makeup game with UCONN on Sunday, BUWRFC gave their minds, hearts and most certainly bodies for the team. BU finished off Northeastern 42-25 on Saturday and closed out the weekend with a 12-5 win over UCONN on Sunday. The team moves on to playoffs at Princeton next weekend.

BUWRFC put up 42 points against Northeastern on Saturday coming from six different players. Both #10 Deanna Nash (SAR ’14) and # 9 Melissa DiFabio (SAR ’12) touched down two tries each for the team while Captain Abby Smigelski (CAS ’12) and Carol Almonte (CAS ’12) added two forward tries to the mix. BU had an excellent drive in the scrums, often winning the ball from underneath Northeastern’s feet. Once the ball was out to the backs, Alex Hublebank (SAR ’14) Chrissy Vailas (COM ’12) and Kiera Vinson (CAS ’13) had an excellent series of looping eventually ending in a try for Vailas. Hublebank banked her own try as well, finishing off the team’s total of 8 tries for the game.

Staying warm at Northeastern during the 2nd game!

With a 6pm KO on Saturday and 11am KO on Sunday (in Connecticut), the team did not have much time to rest and recuperate in between.  However with some Sweet cupcakes, a long walk home and a little Amityville Horror, BUWRFC managed to pull it together and win the battle vs. UCONN. Warmups were a reminder of the toll that this sport takes on your body and although everyone was sore and tired, each player put the team ahead of herself and worked hard for 80 minutes. Freshman Julia Gowesky stepped up to start in her first A-side game after an outstanding B-side game vs. NU the night before. The first 40 ended scoreless with the ball remaining in BU’s possession for the majority of the half. Both teams were quite physical, but BU clearly dominated the scrums and the majority of play. Outside center Chrissy Vailas should think about becoming a forward after holding her own in multiple rucks and Vinson had an outstanding open field tackle to save a potential try. As a whole, the pack had huge runs as well as controlling multiple short phases. Junior Ashley Teamer (CFA ’13) put her knees to work while running through player after player; Carol Almonte (CAS ’12) seemed to be everywhere on the field whether she was picking and going for a few meters, or running down the field while stiff-arming UCONN; Alex Krawczuk (CAS ’13) and Aubrey MacGill (ENG ’13) also made huge gains for BU both contributing play-saving tackles to the game and long runs.

Overall, BUWRFC had fire in their eyes and not a drop of fear for the entire weekend. The two wins should cinch second place in NERFU  and the team will travel to Princeton, NJ next weekend to begin playoffs and face #2 seed in the Ivies, Princeton University.

KEEP ON RUCKING, BU.

BU Women’s Rugby Hires New Head Coach

Boston University Women’s Rugby is excited to announce the hiring of new head coach, Nick Hildebidle. We look forward to an exciting, competitive future with Coach Hildebidle.

Nick Hildebidle was introduced to rugby by a friend in his freshman year at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Since graduating from Trinity Nick has played front row for the Mystic River Rugby Club in Boston and the Potomac Athletic Club in Washington, D.C.

Early in his playing career Nick was drawn to the idea of coaching, and has worked with several college and high school teams including Babson College and Georgetown Prep. In 2008 he was hired by Hyde Leadership Public Charter School in D.C. to teach Middle School Social Studies. While there he coached the Varsity & Junior Varsity forwards and was the Middle School head coach. Nick was also the director of the Hyde Rugby & Leadership Camp, a summer camp that introduces kids as young as nine to the game of rugby. Nick has also coached football at the youth and high school levels.

Nick has recently relocated from Washington to his native Cambridge in order to pursue his Master’s Degree in Physical Education and Coaching at B.U.
